Il David di Michelangelo

I had to go to the Galleria dell'Accademia for an unconventional school assignment, but I was glad that I would finally see The David. The museum layout was confusing so I found David by accident. He was stunning. And huge (seventeen feet high!). His hands and head were too big and it reminded me of how the palazzi are built. Giant bricks are used at the bottom and smaller bricks are used higher up to create an effect of making the palazzo seem bigger than it is (even though it's already really big). Michelangelo intended David to be massive and eye-catching. I was a little surprised at this because after hearing the story of David and Goliath I had always pictured David as being considerably smaller than Goliath. I think that Michelangelo was trying to show that David was big because of the person that he was, and I feel like Michelangelo really conveyed his charisma and power. It was weirdly reassuring to me to see that David carried his little sling. I know nothing about art, but even I can appreciate a giant man made out of one piece of marble. The replicas do not even come close.

And no, I wasn't supposed to take pictures in the museum. But I took these two without getting yelled at. Like a ninja.

"Now then, tell my servant David, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture and from following the flock to be ruler over my people Israel. I have gone with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men of the earth...Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.'" ~ 2 Samuel 8-9,16
