La cena di stasera

Tonight for dinner I had:

1st course: spaghetti
2nd course: le polpette (meatballs), le verdure (vegetables), and baguette bread
Dessert: (2 pieces of) cheesecake con Nutella

So we started with spaghetti. I don't know what the sauce was but somehow the spaghetti is just better here. Then, we had le polpette. My Italian mom buys the meatballs from Ikea and then cooks them in a pomodoro sauce. The meatballs were amazing!

But what was really worth writing about tonight was the cheesecake. My Italian Mom called it cheesecake so I asked her what the Italian name for it was and she said, "Cheesecake!" Easy enough. So from my limited understanding, I think that the Italians might have taken cheesecake from America. It doesn't really matter where it came from though, because of course Italians do it better. I didn't really think that it was possible to improve upon a Marie Callendar's cheesecake. But somehow, they did. They offered it to me con marmellata o Nutella (with jam or Nutella). Of course I got Nutella. And it was perfetto. The cheesecake was soft and delicate and perfect and the Nutella went perfectly and added that extra something. At the moment I think that I could happily live off Italian cheesecake. It's okay that I didn't take a picture because it didn't look as amazing as it is. It is simple but just perfect. The only thing that could possibly make it better was... another slice. And one of the reasons that I love my Italian family is that they never fail to ask if I would like seconds. :)

At dinner, I was also happy to see improvement in my Italian. Of course, I am still terrible, but today I was able to understand a few of the things our dinner guest was saying to me (she's my homestay sis M's friend). And she was speaking dang fast so that was an accomplishment.

In other news, my homestay family is excited for il mondiale (the World Cup), as you might imagine.

Non si vive di solo pane. (One does not live by bread alone.) ~Italian saying
